After being born in Fiji and spending the first years of his life in the countries of Brazil and Costa Rica, Fernando started surfing at the age of 8. When Fernando moved to the coastal village of Sayulita, Mexico he was a 12 year old. There he continued surfing, free diving, and spear fishing. Training with Mexican national surf champions, he quickly became an accomplished waterman, and joined the Mexican national surf team.
In 2010, Fernando took up the sport of Stand Up Paddle boarding. Shortly thereafter, he started traveling the world to compete in various SUP events. He quickly rose through the ranks on the stand up paddle-board circuit, and was crowned world champion by the WPA just two years later.
