When one thinks of surfing in South America immediately Brazil, Peru, and Chile come to mind, but “down south” there’s a very savvy, talented breed of surfers. Among them is the up-and-coming Ornella Pellizzari, a firebrand from Argentina, Ornella is of the crew around La Maquinita and Mar del Plata of which don’t fall by the wayside.
Citing her favorite maneuver as the aerial, and her favorite surfer the ever-cool Craig Anderson, there’s little question what approach Ornella takes in the water. Lips are intender to be bashed, brutalized and aired over. And maybe it has to do something with her upbringing along the tip of South America, but the more powerful the waves the better. “I wanna catch some bombs,” you can often hear her uttering.
And so how does she prepare herself for the gnar? Why by skating pools, ditches, ramps and just about anything else she can roll four wheels across. Ornella is that special breed of surfer that doesn’t balk when the waves go flat, she just grabs her skateboard and keeps riding. In 2013 she won the Roxy Surf Jam, but notes that it’s not all about contests. She says she’s looking to “improve [her] ranking on tour, and do some surf/skate touring to some rad countries. I want to go looking for uncrowded waves and hang with a good crew of friends.” Along the way she may just remind everybody how good surfers from Argentina are.
